Aloha, my name is Carrie Kaufmann. My name sign is SPARKLE FROM EYE. I was born and raised in San Diego, CA, and graduated from San Diego Mesa College with my interpreting degree in 2004. I can’t believe I’ve been interpreting for 21 years! My husband, Dano, and I moved to Hawai’i Island in 2018 during the Lower East Rift Zone eruption.
We jumped right into interpreting for the county meetings with Mary Love. That is how we learned our way around the island! We drove to meetings in Pahala, Kona, and near our home in Pahoa. It was very different than city life, but a great way to jump right into serving the deaf community here in Hawai’i while learning all about the culture and language of this special “Aina.
Dano and I have been working all over the island, as part of this hui we have created. I am happy to assist you in education about using an interpreter, how to hire an interpreter, or put you in touch with our Deaf advocate to assist in educating any business about why it is so important to provide equal access. Mahalo, and I look forward to working with you in the future!”
